| HS (the Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System) changes!! |
| The World Customs Organization(WCO) developed the Harmonized Commodity
Description and Coding System(HS) nomenclature, which is used as a standardized
nomenclature for international trade in order to aviod duplicate product
classifications in different countries. The HS consists of about 5,000
commodity groups, each of which is assigned a unique six-digit code. It
also includes rules and definitions intended to foster uniform classification
of commodities under the HS. The WCO has released its latest amendment to the HS. The 4th major amendment to the HS will take effect from 1 January 2007. The changes happen at the 6 digit (subheading) level, which means that countries will have to adjust their national tariffs that are normally published at an 8 or 9 or 10 digit level. Japan, using an 9 digit. If the subheading changes, the classification of the article in that country will change. The HS nomenclature is a goods classification system used by Japan and more than 200 other countries as a basis for their Customs tariffs and for the collection of international trade statistics. |
